BIOGRAPHY

Farai Matake, born Farai Machingambi, is a passionate songwriter, self-taught instrumentalist, and craftsman of African indigenous musical instruments. His musical journey began in 1997 when he received his first Mbira as a sacred gift from a Spirit Medium (Svikiro) relative at Masononga, a revered mountain near the Great Zimbabwe area. This gift marked the start of his lifelong dedication to African music, heritage preservation, and cultural connection. Drawing inspiration from the rhythms and harmonies of traditional African music, Farai’s sound is a vibrant blend of Jiti, African classical music, Chimurenga, and Afro-beat. With the Mbira, Marimba, guitar, and vocals as his primary instruments, Farai brings both authenticity and innovation to his performances, weaving the ancient and the modern into a soulful musical experience. As a skilled instrument maker, Farai is dedicated to preserving African heritage through the creation of traditional instruments such as the Mbira, Djembe drums, shakers, and other handcrafted percussions. He established Matake Projects in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2014, which has since become a hub for African music lovers, offering instrument crafting, repairs, and hands-on training. With a belief in the power of music to unite and inspire, Farai Matake’s work embodies the values of Ubuntu fostering social cohesion and connecting people through the rhythms and stories of African culture. His work continues to uplift and preserve African heritage, bridging generations and sparking creative engagement worldwide.
